Inside: a hum, not a rattle
The indoor unit of a split system is only a fan and a coil; the compressor, the noisy part, lives outside on the wall. On its lower fan speeds a modern unit sits at a soft background hum, quieter than the fridge you already sleep a wall away from, and most carry a night or quiet mode that caps the fan for sleeping hours.
Where an indoor unit gets loud, something is usually wrong with the sizing rather than the unit: a system too small for the room runs flat out all evening, while a correctly sized one cruises. It is one more reason the survey matters as much as the brochure.
Outside: placement is the whole game
The outdoor unit is where the work happens, and its steady low hum is more noticeable to a neighbour two metres from it than to you inside. The installer's job is to place it with clear airflow, solid mounting that cannot pass vibration into a bedroom wall, and as much distance as the plot allows from windows on both sides of the fence.
A few metres of thoughtful placement at the survey does more than any silencing accessory afterwards. If several rooms are being done, one condenser running a multi-split also means one outdoor sound source instead of two or three.
