What the grant pays
The grant covers 75% of the cost of buying and installing a chargepoint socket, capped at £500, after rising from £350 on 1 April 2026. Set against a typical 7kW installation of £700 to £1,200, that is a serious slice of the bill for the households it covers, and funding is confirmed until 31 March 2027.
It applies across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, and it is claimed per socket rather than per property, which matters most for landlords: residential landlords can claim on up to 200 sockets a year across their properties.
Who qualifies, and who does not
The household grant is aimed at renters and flat owners with private off-street parking. That combination is the whole scheme in one sentence: you need to live somewhere you do not own outright as a house, and you need somewhere private to park. A homeowner in a house with a driveway, which is most people pricing up a charger, generally does not qualify.
The edges move, though. Government has extended support towards homeowners without a driveway, and the rules have changed more than once, which is why the honest advice is to check the current GOV.UK guidance, or simply ask your installer, before assuming either way. You do not apply for a cheque. The installer claims the grant through the scheme and takes it off your bill, so an eligible household should see the deduction on the quote itself. That has a practical consequence: the grant only exists if your installer is approved to claim it, which is worth confirming when you compare quotes.
