Air conditioning installation: what actually happens

A single-room air conditioning installation is usually four to eight hours of work, which makes it one of the quicker upgrades a house can get. What separates a tidy job from a regrettable one is mostly decided before the day: in the survey, the specification and the quote. Here is the whole sequence, and the questions worth asking at each stage.

The survey, where the job is really designed

A proper survey settles the three placements that decide everything: where the indoor unit sits for airflow across the room, where the outdoor condenser can live, and the route the pipework takes between them. The distance and awkwardness of that run is most of the labour, and labour is most of the price, so a quote produced without seeing the house is a guess.

The survey is also where the heating question belongs: most modern units are reversible, and deciding you want winter heating too is far easier before the pipework goes in than after the install.

Installation day, hour by hour

The shape of the day: the indoor unit goes on the wall, the condenser is mounted outside on brackets or a base, and a cored hole through the wall carries the pipework, cabling and condensate drain between them. The refrigerant connections are then pressure tested before the system is charged and commissioned, and the day ends with the controls in your hand and a first run in both modes.

The finishing details are where quotes differ: trunking to hide the pipe run, making good around the drilling, and any redecoration should be itemised, not assumed. Ask for them in writing and installation day holds no surprises, aesthetic or financial.

F-gas, paperwork and what to keep

The refrigerant in the system is a controlled gas, and whoever handles it must be F-gas certified. That is a legal requirement rather than a credential to weigh against others, which makes it the easiest filter in the whole comparison: ask, and expect an immediate yes.

Keep the commissioning record and the warranty registration with the house documents. Then the only remaining decision is who does the work: compare quotes from trusted air conditioning installers, and if more than one room is on the list, read how multi-splits change the arithmetic before the survey rather than after.
